...don't exist if you have a dachshund in the bed with you. Even more so if said dachshund is made out of taffy and stretches to absolutely bizarre lengths when she's sleeping. One thing to know up front is that Lily is a very long dachshund - she's at least 16.5 inches from neck to end of body. When Lily gets comfy as she's sleeping she stretches...and stretches...and stretches. It's not uncommon for Marc or I to call the other one from some other part of the house to come marvel at the length to which Lily has stretched. We say that she's made out of taffy because we have no other explanation for how she reaches these lengths.
Lil sleeps in her bed on the floor next to ours, but every once in a while she's allowed to sleep in bed with us (don't tell Tucker!). A few weeks ago she slept with us - typically we have no issues, but on this particular night she was being a complete bed hog. Marc and I analyzed the situation the next morning over breakfast on the white board:
Upper right drawing: How the night started off. Lily is curled in a ball between the edge of the bed and Marc. Marc is on his back with is arms folded under his head. I am on my side facing away from them.
Upper left drawing: This is what it looked like when the alarm went off a few hours later. Lily had stretched to lengths reaching over half the bed. Marc was squished over to my side and couldn't stretch out his leg. I appeared not to have moved (I'm a very heavy sleeper). I believe I was unaffected by the situation that particular night.
Bottom drawing: How we feel sometimes when Lily sleeps with us. She's the long line across the bed and we're both in the upper corner. Another thing to note is that Lily always has to sleep diagnally or perpendicular to us...she can never just conform and lay parallel.
All in all we love to cuddle with Lil and will continue to marvel at the lengths to which she can stretch...even if it is a little uncomfortable for us!
